A "parent school safety patrol" refers to the parental role in supporting or participating in a school's Safety Patrol program, this is based on the student safety patrol most of us had when we were kids in the 80’s and a lot of schools still have this program for students.
The patrol which typically involves students assisting their peers with traffic safety to and from school and on school property under the guidance of school officials, In the case of the Parent School Safety Patrol, we utilize parents, guardians, grandparents of students to help provide a security presence on a campus. This includes walking outside the school grounds, inside the hallways, being present at student drop off and pick up and reporting any potential dangers or issues.
One of the most overlooked security features that is overlooked is simply having eyes watching. This is often overlooked because it is so simple. We can assist schools set up a program, there is not cost from us. It is important to note that a district staff member will need to be in charge of the program and each campus should have a campus contact as well to help schedule safety patrol volunteers.
Note about carrying firearms: To legally carry on a campus there are two pathways, 1. Current or retied law enforcement who are registered with TCOLE and participate in TCOLE qualification requirements and school guardians. School guardians must be staff members and must pass the Texas DPS school guardian program instruction. Any other carry on a campus is violation of the law. Those who do qualify under this section must carry concealed and have written permission from the school administration. Clothing: Parent patrollers should wear plane clothes. We suggest wearing a school shirt, Safety Patrol but it is not required. We also recommend a school ID of some sort. This will help reduce calls for suspicious people on campus.
